Give honest answers to the following questions:
Long term plans have worked for you?
Is funding your real problem?
Do you believe that your formal education was essential for what you are doing today?
Are you truly short of time?
Are you waiting for inspiration?
If your answer to the above questions is yes, most likely, you are struggling in your business.
Plans are our best guesses. When we plan for the long-term, we are guessing big time. Small businesses are better off planning for the next 3-6 months. We have better control over the outcomes in that short period. Scarcity pushes us to use the available resources optimally. When we look for funding, we are killing the innovation and losing control of our business. It is essential to check whether we are squandering cash chasing the mass market too early.
Except for the certified professional services, formal education is adequate for very few businesses. Most often, our work is totally disconnected from what we do. Yet, when we hire people, the first thing we look for is their education. We ignore other critical aspects like attitude, energy, creativity.
Many people are busy and postpone vital initiatives. They are either spreading themselves thin over several non-critical tasks or are scared of failure. Inaction is the worst of all risks we take. We need to stop ticking boxes and instead focus on meaningful tasks.
