I sit in the meetings of many companies. Invariably, many participants are shocked hearing the information presented by their colleagues. They get to know it for the first time in the meeting. A lot of discussions and debates ensue. Time is wasted on arguments and counterarguments. Very rarely do such a meeting gets back on track.
Meetings are expensive. It is worthwhile to compute the cost of it. Manhour cost x time of the meeting would itself be an enormous number. Add to it the cost of traveling, food, and the opportunity cost of not doing something else because of the meeting. It is, therefore, imperative to have productive meetings.
Inside the company, meetings should never be for sharing information. They should be making decisions or brainstorming solutions. Even if we simply enforce this simple rule, we would make the meetings very productive.
There are many solutions available today to share information in real-time. Slack is a platform for sharing data, views, issues and enabling teams to collaborate and provide their inputs. Unlike Email or Whatsapp Chat, Slack is quick. We can create separate channels and add members to them. This ensures that information is stored on a common platform and is assessable.
