How to spread your network?

It is a noted fact that networking is the cheapest form of generating leads and developing collaborative solutions. Yet, very few small companies work on increasing their network. In this article, I am providing a basic recipe to build your network.

Metrics:

1. List the type of connections you want to engage. It could be an industry, specific levels in an organization, people belonging to targeted demography.

2. Against each category, mention the reason why you wish to connect.

3. Dig into your existing network of friends, family members, business contacts, past-colleagues, alumni. In the first phase, contact them via phone and plan a one-to-one meeting. With formal contacts, emails and messages may work. Secure secondary connects from them.

4. Many of the local organizations conduct regular events or at least have a newsletter. Attend their meetings or signup for their newsletter. If you find an overlap in their area of work and your field of interest, connect deeper. Become their member and volunteer to take leadership positions.

5. LinkedIn has several professional groups. If that group has your targeted customers or your solution-providers, seek an entry into it.

6. All the above steps would eventually lead you to several industry-specific national organizations. Make it a point to attend a few of their conferences, exhibitions, workshops, etc. It is the best way to connect with opinion leaders in the industry.

7. Review where you are getting the biggest bang for your bucks. Narrow your focus on connections and methods that are working best for you. Spread your network deeper in these areas.
