What are the training programs you have conducted in your organization in the last two years?
How many man-days have been invested for this purpose?
What is the budget you have allocated for the following:
Training Programs
Books and Periodicals
Awards
Celebrations
In some cases, these expenses are put under some generic head. In most cases, they are not even budgeted.
The business environment is changing rapidly. The only way to stay relevant is to be in a continuous mode of learning and applying. But, it is not limited to only participating in programs. There are many ways of enhancing the learning culture. Here are some pointers:
Create a knowledge-sharing platform. Peer-to-peer sharing of experiences is an effective way of gaining knowledge. It also fosters leadership and teamwork in the organization.
Make it mandatory to share the microlearning. It provides the essential ingredients for people to come up with new insights. The videos, post-it notes, memos made in this process are valuable organizational assets.
Conduct reflection sessions. Japanese management system recommends conducting sensei sessions after every project completion. In these sessions, the team looks at the mistakes made and lessons learned. It helps the team reflect on past mistakes and avoid them in the future.
Motivate employees through reward programs. It is now possible to gamify learning and create a system of points and badges. Healthy competition amongst employees accelerates learning. Companies can sponsor people for advanced courses and for attending conferences.
Give constructive feedback. No system can work without metrics. Therefore, set up a process of measuring outcomes. It is essential to give positive as well as negative feedback. While the former builds confidence and reinforces the behavior, the latter is critical for course correction and refocusing.
The emphasis on job-specific training is critical. However, soft skills like collaboration, communication, reflection create the ground for cultural change.
Metrics:
Assess your learning management system using the five elements described above.
Take baby steps and plan micro-sessions for the next couple of weeks.
Learn from the process and scale-up.
