In Hindu Philosophy, the Trinity - Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh is considered the Creator, Caretaker, and Destroyer. We can observe this cycle in many biological systems. Somehow, we forget about this cycle in Businesses. While we add new ideas, concepts, technologies and maintain existing equipment, culture, systems, we rarely destroy things on purpose. This complicates organizations and makes them less productive.
Here is an example:
In my old organization, we implemented ERP. However, we continued to maintain a lot of documents and records in the paper format. People grumbled that the ERP was increasing their workload. Actually, people were running two parallel systems, and it was causing burnout.
So, what can we do?
We need to periodically ask our employees, customers, and other stakeholders these 3 questions:
1. What do we need to do differently/new?
2. What is working for us?
3. What should we systematically discard?
If we carefully listen to the answers, it will reveal a lot of problem areas. We will identify things that are killing productivity in our organization. We will know which of our products and services need to be culled and which need to be augmented.
