Building a team - ground up

The talent crunch is a huge challenge faced by every organization. People often ask me how they can find competent people ready to start delivering results. I believe that whoever finds a solution to this problem will build the most profitable organization on this planet!

Based on my experience in SI Group, Rasal and Yashraj Biotechnology Ltd. - Integrated Drug Discovery & Development, building a team from the ground up, especially in times of talent crunch, can be a strategic move.

History could provide us with a way to tackle this challenge.

Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj's strategies in building the Hindavi Swaraj provide an excellent example of building a team from the ground up. He started with a small band of loyal followers and gradually built an army by recruiting individuals based on their loyalty, skills, and commitment to the cause rather than relying solely on experienced mercenaries.

The common obstacles in building a team ground up are:

- inexperienced people making decision-making and problem-solving difficult

- time required in creating a talent pool

- resources needed in building a team that takes time to become productive

- the inherent risk involved in relying solely on unproven talent, especially in competitive industries or fast-paced environments

How did Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj overcome these challenges:

Training and Discipline: He invested heavily in training and discipline, transforming his ragtag army into a formidable fighting force.

Strategic Alliances: He forged strategic alliances with local leaders and communities, leveraging their resources and support.

Innovative Tactics: He employed innovative guerrilla tactics and asymmetric warfare strategies to overcome the numerical and technological advantages of his adversaries.

Merit-based Promotion: He promoted individuals based on merit rather than solely on lineage or seniority, incentivizing performance and loyalty.

Building a team from the ground up requires careful planning and investment. However, it can offer long-term benefits in terms of cultural alignment, loyalty, and skill development. By addressing the potential shortcomings through structured training, mentorship, and strategic alliances, organizations can mitigate risks and maximize the potential of their homegrown talent.

What is your game plan?
