I had an opportunity to work at Yashraj Biotechnology Ltd. and Aspira Pathlab & Diagnostics Limited. For the first time in my life, I witnessed the propagation of cell lines, various biological expression systems producing specific proteins, and the propagation of microbial colonies.
I was intrigued by the way our microbiologist processed various samples. It was hard and diligent work. They grew the colonies on a substrate. They selected the right media to facilitate their growth. They critically monitored the morphology, performed Gram staining to identify the type of bacteria present in the colonies, and conducted various biochemical, genetic, and functional tests. They selected only the healthy and fast-growing colonies and promoted their growth by selecting optimal culture conditions, providing nutrition supplements, following aseptic techniques, incubating, sub-culturing, etc. The attention to detail was mind-boggling. The risks of contamination, over or under-growth, mutation, genetic drift, etc. had to be prevented by close monitoring.
Can we become a microbiologist in our business?
- Select the right customer segments and provide them with the right products.
- Promptly discard customers that contaminate the culture and rob organizational resources that can otherwise be provided to good customers.
- Maintain business sanctity through reliable systems.
- Close monitor the business environment to identify new threats.
- Listen to what our customers are saying and take prompt action.

PS: The microbiology procedures and terminologies may not be 100% accurate. How much can an Engineer who opted out of Biology learn?
