7 Habits was the book I bought from my first salary. So, it is apt to have it as the first book in this series of blogs. The foundation of the book 7 Habits is based on three core concepts.
Stimulus and Response: Between a stimulus and response is a finite interval. In this gap, all the choices exist. However, once we have exercised it, we are responsible for the outcome.
P-PC Balance: We often lay too much emphasis on the results (Production). However, we ignore committing resources to maintain our production capability. It is essential to balance both these things.
Circle of Control and Concern: We should focus our energies on things we can control. Each of us has a small area on which we have absolute control. However, as we focus more on it, this circle expands. It is no point wasting time on things that are outside it.
7 Habits are divided into 2 parts. The first three habits are essentially aimed at self-improvement (Personal Victory). The other four are based on how you can become a contributing member of a team (Public Victory). This is our progression on the ladder of maturity from Dependent - Independent - Interdependence.
Habit 1 - Be Proactive: The opposite of proactive is reactive. When we react, we minimize our choices. On the contrary, when we think and choose from alternatives, we are driven by intrinsic factors instead of externalities.
Habit 2 - Start with the end in mind: Without a clear objective, no purposeful action is possible. This habit enables us to set clear goals.
Habit 3 - First things first: Time management is a critical habit for being effective. However, it is much more than just setting up a to-do list. We should prioritize activities. The priority should be for tasks that enable us to achieve our long-term goals.
Habit 4 - Think Win-Win: Meaningful things can be achieved if we think of the larger goal that benefits all concerned. This is possible with a Win-Win mindset.
Habit 5 - Seek first to understand, then to be understood: This is a habit of active listening. We should actively listen to others before putting forth our views. This improves respect and communication in a team. It also helps the team to become more productive and cohesive.
Habit 6 - Synergize: In mathematics, 2+2 is always 4. However, if teams with diverse skill sets come together, anything is possible. This is the power of synergy.
Habit 7 - Sharpen the Saw: This is the habit of lifelong learning. It helps us to stay updated and expand our horizons.
My pictorial story should make it easy for you to understand concepts in the book - 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Your constant encouragement in the form of comments and feedbacks motivates me to do new things and improve.
